Abstract
In the article a comparative analysis of the concepts of «stress tolerance» and «emotional stability» is attempted. Perceptible discrepancies in the understanding of the concepts and their synonymic use in scientific discourse make the issue topical. Positions of scientists as to the interpretation of the concepts of «stress tolerance» and «emotional stability» are ascertained. It is found out that stress tolerance and emotional stability are treated as properties of personality. However, emotional stability is commonly understood as an integrative quality, and its indicators are control over emotions, stability of emotional state and optimal use of reserves of neuro-psychic energy. Instead, stress tolerance is a set of inherent and acquired psychological and physiological characteristics of an individual. It is maintained that stress indicators are emotional stability, self-control, self-regulation, psychological stability, frustration tolerance. It is determined that emotional stability provides an ability to achieve goals successfully in difficult emotiogenic conditions with control over emotions, whereas stress tolerance ensures performing vital functions successfully, meeting considerable intellectual, volitional and emotional demands in stressful conditions while maintaining psychophysical balance and avoiding harmful effects on activity and health. It is admitted that an in-depth study of the concept of stress tolerance should be carried out. The concept is topical in modern psychology and therefore is important in consideration of interpretation of its essence by the researchers.
