Comparative Analysis of Used-Original and New-Non Original Equipment Manufacturer’s Automobile Spare Parts in Nigeria

Abstract
In Nigeria, dependent on general belief and customers/auto mechanic reviews, there has been a need to clear the cloud of ambiguity surrounding the preference of auto parts buyers for used Original Equipment Manufacturer’s auto spare parts over new Non Original Equipment Manufacturer’s auto spare parts. Herein lies a significant contribution that addresses this issue. Five different auto spare parts namely pistons, ball joints, linking rods, drive shafts and tie rods of a Toyota Corolla 2001 model from both manufacturers were comparatively studied. The experimental techniques used include X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Tensile Test, Izod Impact Test, Fatigue Test, Hardness Test and Metallography. It was found that there are deviations in the elemental compositions of both spare parts, which consequently influence the overall properties and resultant performance of the spare parts. It was also found that aside from the hardness property where the new spare parts comparably outperformed the used auto spare parts, other investigated properties for the used auto spare parts evinced superiority.
