Comparison of different medium for production of Sweet pepper transplant

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

In recent decades, cultivation in greenhouses as an effective way of yield increasing is considered that the soilless culture is one of the most important methods. Due to expensiveness of peat media, looking for substitution of materials instead of peat is strictly followed. Hence to achieve the best and most appropriate culture media to produce healthy, strong and homogeneous transplant of greenhouse pepper, a study was conducted with one cultivar of green pepper (called ES 8700) in 5 beds and 9 different combinations in a completely randomized design with 4 replications in Jahrom city (Fars province). Some traits such as root number, fresh and dry weight of root and shoot, length and diameter of transplants in 4-5 leaf stage were measured. The results showed that produced seedlings had better conditions in peat moss media and they were in the highest values. In addition, peat moss and coco-peat as pure form or mixed with sand, had better result than other media and cultivation in soil and palm-peat media were not suitable for transplant production.
