Confirmatory Factor Analysis of Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale
Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2025, Vol 30, Issue 2
Abstract
Academic demands, social adaptations, and identity exploration are just a few of the difficulties that come with making the move to college life. These difficulties can have a negative impact on self-esteem. Additionally, the intricacy of today's collegiate environments is unheard-of, with traditional self-esteem variables entwined with social media involvement, peer comparisons, and academic success. As a result, it is crucial to investigate the particular aspects of self-esteem that apply to college students and to clarify the complex interactions between these aspects and the whole college experience. This study aimed to evaluate the factor structure of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with a sample of 366 undergraduate students in the Philippines ages 15 and above. The researchers identified the profile of the respondents as to year level, gender, and age. The predominant demographic of our respondents consisted of individuals in their first year of college, namely those aged between 20 and 21. During this stage of adolescence, the primary concern revolves around matters of identity, physical appearance, and self-worth, with a special emphasis on female respondents. Based on our findings, the CFA analysis showed that the majority of the indicators of the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale are of sufficient variance, except for indicator 8 which is “I wish I could have more respect for myself”. Using JAMOVI as a statistical tool package, it can be found that the model has a good fit with the CFI of 0.918, SRMR of 0.0622, and RMSEA of 0.0864 based on the P value of <.001 however the TLI of 0.892 is significantly lower. The sample size of 366 is good enough to fit the model using chi-square and produce a significant P value <.001. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the disparity between genders and self-esteem arises during the adolescence stage and lasts up to middle adulthood, also gender differences are reported culture-based phenomena. It is recommended, therefore, that gender disparities be persuaded by widespread systems that incorporate both universal sociocultural variables and genetically determined biological processes that go further than culture and instances specifically in the Philippines.
