Conservation and restoration of archaeological textiles from the disturbed Altai burial mounds of the early Iron age

Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 13

Abstract

The article deals with the experience of scientific restoration "Ostrov Krym" laboratory in the conservation and restoration of archaeological textiles from disturbed mounds of the IV–III centuries BC, located in the Kazakh Altai. The specialists of the laboratory participate in field works, carrying out the extraction of large monolith blocks with findings, using the methods of forming blocks that were developed in practice. Two methods are considered aimed at conservation of textile fabrics recovered from excavation blocks, depending on their content. The first method – sequential splitting of the block into its components – is used in the presence of a random set of organic material fragments. The process of stratification of the conglomerate, stabilization of the separated fragments and their identification is described. In the process of textile items reconstruction, well-preserved analogs of synchronous Altai burial mounds located on the territory of Russia and Mongolia are used. Examples of reconstruction of felt items are cited. The second method consists in block preservation without dissection. It is applied if block content is regarded as a kind of independent indivisible complex. The process of conservation is shown by the case-study of the saddle set, extracted from the excavation pit with the remains of the horse in damp state.
