Contemporary Hinduism and the Religious Field in Lithuania
Journal Title: KultŁ«ra ir visuomenė. Socialiniٳ tyrimٳ پurnalas - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
The paper analyzes contemporary hinduism in lithuania, the issues of its identifica- tion and definition, a variety of its forms and public attitudes towards it. The author argues that studies and research of “living hinduisms” in lithuania are under-developed because these groups distance themselves from the traditional religion and emphasize their aims to disseminate spirituality. meanwhile the diversity of contemporary hin- duism in the lithuanian religious field is obvious, ranging from very traditional to liberal forms of doctrine, organization, etc. The author argues that self-identification of most groups of contemporary hinduism is related to the lithuanian social context dominated by hegemonic catholicism. it is possible to conclude, on the basis of the empirical study (participant observation, semi-structured interviews and public opinion polls), that the majority of communi- ties representing contemporary hinduism in lithuania form a spiritual milieu suppor- ted by society, because they are not perceived as a threat to dominating catholicism. however, the research also demonstrates that members of contemporary hinduism groups experience antagonism towards their beliefs and practices from their relatives and friends. Such findings in the article confirm Pierre Bourdieu’s insights about the religious field in which religious communities fight for the monopoly of the religious capital.
