Dental anomalies in patients with cleft lip and palate

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: Cleft lip and palate is the most common orofacial malformation. Many endogenous and exogenous factors play an important role in the occurrence of his deformity. Due to the character of this malformation, children with cleft lip and/or palate are included in the multidisciplinary medical care programme. A number of dental anomalies are associated with cleft lip and/or palate. Aim of this study: To present current knowledge on the most common dental anomalies in patients with cleft lip and/or palate. Conclusion: Dental anomalies in patients with cleft lip and/or palate are more frequent occurrences than in the rest of the population. They primarily include hypodontia, increased number of tooth germs, or tooth structure and eruption disturbances. It is argued that anomalies of dental shape and structure most often affect upper lateral incisor on the clefted side. Any tooth may be affected by disrupted eruption, however, maxillary teeth seem to bear the brunt, which may be due to its underdevelopment resulting from constricting post-operative palatal scars.
