Detection of difficult conceptions in dairy cows using selected data mining methods
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2011, Vol 29, Issue 4
Abstract
In the present study, the detection of difficult conceptions in dairy cows using selected data mining methods – na ve Bayes classifier (NBC) and regression and classifications trees (CART) is presented. The set of 11 diagnostic variables was used, which included, among others, number of lactation, artificial insemination (AI) season, age of inseminated cow, proportion of HF-genes in cow genotype, sex of calf from preceding calving, length of pregnancy, milk, protein and fat yield. Two conception classes were distinguished: the GOOD class, if a cow conceived after one or two AIs and the “POOR” class, if more than two AIs per conception were required. The models were characterized by capability of predicting the membership of conceptions to either class. Correctness of predictions was 83%. CART proved to be more precise in detecting conceptions of the POOR class (sensitivity) compared with predictions by NBC (P≤0.01). Specificity was similar for both classifiers (90% and 93%). Among the variables determining conception class, calving-to-conception interval, calving interval and the difference between the mean body condition and condition at AI were the most significant variables for CART. Utilization of these classifiers, particularly of CART, may help a breeder to appropriately prepare cows for AI, thus contributing to the improved financial results of a herd.

Immunohistochemical distribution of c-Kit and its gene expression via real-time PCR in skin tissue of goats with a black and white coat colour
The signaling pathway of the stem cell factor and its receptor, c-Kit, plays an important physiological role in melanogenesis. The expression of c-Kit was investigated using real-time quantitative PCR and immunohistochem...
A single nucleotide polymorphism in CAST gene is associated with meat quality traits in rabbits
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of the Calpastatin (CAST) gene on meat quality traits in the Hyla, Champagne and Tianfu Black rabbit breeds. We detected one single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP...
Rabbit growth performance, carcass traits and hind leg bone characteristics as affected by the sire breed, season, parity order and sex in an organic production system
Live performance, carcass traits and hind leg bone characteristics of crossbred rabbits of both sexes (Sx) of two sire breeds (SB): Vienna Blue – (VB) and Burgundy Fawn – (BF) born with different parity orders (P: 1, 2,...
Cathepsin mRNA level in bovine cumulus cells fails to be a good marker of oocyte quality
Cathepsins (CTS) are lysosomal cysteine proteinases, of which elevated transcript content is attributed to the reduced quality of oocytes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether transcript content of three CTS...
Gene expression profiling by cDNA-AFLP and identification of differentially expressed transcripts of bovine pituitary gland in growing bulls of dairy breeds
The study utilized age-dependent breed-specific gene expression profiling by cDNA-AFLP technique in identification of differentially expressed (DE) candidate genes for growth and development trait. Results revealed 15579...
