Diabetes type 2 and Alzheimer disease – one or two diseases? Mechanisms of association
Journal Title: Advances in Hygiene and Experimental Medicine - Year 2013, Vol 67, Issue 0
Abstract
Some epidemiological data and pathophysiological evidence suggest similarities and connectionof two amyloidoses: diabetes mellitus type 2, (DM2) (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus,NIDDM) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). What they have in common is insulin resistance, neurodegeneration, development and progression of dementia, and the fact that in the courseof both diseases fibrillar aggregates of specific proteins are accumulated in affected organs. What is more, experimental evidence also supports the hypothesis that small prefibrillar aggregatesthat emerge prior to the appearance of mature fibrils are responsible for a key stepin development and cytotoxicity of both diseases. They also have similar pathogenic effects. Both peptides possess the common receptor AMY3. More and more evidence is accumulatingthat key cell regulation processes are similar for both diseases as well. The question is raised:can Alzheimer be a new form of diabetes disease?

Investigations of seborrheic dermatitis. Part I. The role of selected cytokines in the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis
Introduction: The etiology of seborrheic dermatitis is not fully understood. It has been observed that a number of anascogenic yeasts of Malassezia spp. is related to the intensity of the symptoms. The aim of the study i...
The potential nephrotoxicity of antiretroviral drugs
The intensive studies carried out in many scientific laboratories and the efforts of numerous pharmaceutical companies have led to the development of drugs which are able to effectively inhibitHIV proliferation. At pres...
The importance of pharmacogenetic tests in evaluation of the effectiveness of methotrexate treatment in rheumatoid arthritis (part 2)

Expression of PIM-2 and NF-κB genes is increased in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and is associated with complete remission rate and overall survival
Introduction: PIM-2 is a proto-oncogene that encodes for a serine/threonine kinase that interacts with various signaling molecules. PIM-2 is highly expressed in neoplastic tissues and in leukemic and lymphoma cell lines,...
Phytochemicals that counteract the cardiotoxic side effects of cancer chemotherapy
Almost all clinically used antitumor drugs exhibit toxic side effects affecting heart function. Because of cardiotoxicity during anticancer chemotherapy, effective doses of cytostatics have to be limited, which may worse...
