Abstract

Despite there’re many researches have been conducted in subsurface drip irrigation (SDI), local information on the response of corn growth and water dynamics with SDI is very limited in Tunisia. As in many parts of the world, the interaction of climate, soils, and crop production presents unique arrangements that require local research to adjust the production systems. In this paper we suggest determining the water soil dynamics for the surface and subsurface drip irrigation and to evaluate the water’s saving of each irrigation system. This study was conducted at the High Agronomic Institute of Sousse-Tunisia, for a maize crop. The soil moisture was measured by TDR. Lows water’s stock variation in soil stored for subsurface drip irrigation system at 0.35 m depth have led to improve the availability of water for the crop in the root zone translating more stable water condition and better water conservation to nearly 11.4% compared to a buried drip irrigation to 0.05 cm. These water conditions have ensured an increase in the production system buried drip irrigation in general and especially for one whose depth is 0.35 m where the yield increased of 22.8% compared to the surface mode to achieve 134.72 qha-1.
