DIMINUTIVITY IN ROALD DAHL'S FAIRY TALES: THE AUTHOR'S INVENTION OR THE TRANSLATOR'S APPROACH (A CASE STUDY OF «JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH»)?

Abstract

Roald Dahl, an outstanding British novelist and a short story writer, is famous for his peculiar and distinct individual style. Being so popular among young readers, R. Dahl’s fairy tales are translated into a number of languages, eagerly discussed and screened. His children’s books have unsentimental and macabre mood, contain a lot of darkly comic and grotesque scenarios, including gruesome violence. They typically involve kind-hearted children as opposed to villainous adults. «James and the Giant Peach» features a lonely boy James Henry Trotter who has to live with his horrible aunts after his parents’ death. But one day something magical happens and overhauls his whole life. The tale is spiced up with the author’s inventive and playful use of language, which is a key element to his writing. One of such elements is the category of diminutivity, which is variously represented in the original text and its Ukrainian translation due to linguistic peculiarities of the languages and mentality differences of the two nations. The analysis of the category of diminutivity shows that the translated work isn’t devoid of the translator’s subjectivity which doesn’t eclipse the author’s manner of writing.
