Dosimetry in Nuclear and Radiation Emergencies
Journal Title: Nükleer Tıp Seminerleri - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
Radiation absorbed dose assessment has critical importance especially in mass casualty conditions for sorting (triage) and medical management of patients in nuclear or radiological emergencies. Dose estimates can be done roughly by knowing clinical signs and symptoms, including time to onset of nausea and vomiting, cognition status and neurological deficits. Peripheral blood cell counts are also very useful for initial dose assessment especially lymphocyte counts in 48 hours after whole body exposure. More precise dose assessment can be made using cytogenetic dosimetry methods, electron paramagnetic resonance, other biodosimetry indicators, external and internal dosimetry techniques. In this review advantages and limitations of current dosimetry techniques will be discussed in different nuclear or radiological accident scenarios.
