Early diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in primary health care

Abstract

Background. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, autoimmune, inflammatory disease of unknown etiology characterized as a progressive disease, leading to joint destruction, physical activity limitation, disability and premature death RA is estimated to affect up to 1% of the adult population in Poland and is associated with significant socioeconomic costs. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in achieving remission and prevention of RA complications. Therefore, the role of the primary health care doctors becomes extremely important in multidisciplinary care of RA patients. Objectives. This paper highlighted the role of primary health care doctors in early RA diagnosis and treatment.Abbreviated description of the state of knowledge. The article was based on the new classification criteria for rheumatoid arthritis developed by the Joint Working Group of American rheumatologists from the American College of Rheumatology and European experts from the European League Against Rheumatism, and EULAR recommendations for the management of rheumatoid arthritis with synthetic and biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs Summary. Primary health care doctors play a significant role in diagnosis and treatment of RA patients. Early RA diagnosis and treatment allow to achieve remission or low disease activity in a relatively short time. New classification criteria and recommendations for the management of RA are the important support to the primary health care doctors. Presented data could also be helpful for all professionals involved in organization and improvement of outpatient care
