Effect of combined perio-orthodontic treatment on periodontal tissues of maxillary incisors – clinical evaluation
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 2
Abstract
Aim of the study: To evaluate the effect of perio-orthodontic treatment on selected clinical periodontal parameters of maxillary incisors. Periodontal status was assessed by probing pocket depth and checking clinical attachment level. Material and methods: The study was carried out on 29 adult patients with chronic periodontitis and maxillary incisors migration with vertical bone defects. They were treated by means of a combined periodontal and orthodontic therapy. Periodontal surgery procedures involved the use of xenogenic graft material (BioOss®) to fill bone defects, while subsequent orthodontic treatment utilized fixed appliances. Results: Significant decrease of mean probing pocket depth and significant reconstruction of connective tissue attachment at central maxillary incisors were achieved. Improvement of dental esthetics resulted from realignment of teeth and significant midline papilla reconstruction.
