Effect of soil tillage intensity on water capacity and volumetric water content in maize agrocenosis

Journal Title: Žemės ūkio mokslai - Year 2016, Vol 23, Issue 4

Abstract

The field experiment was initiated at the Experimental Sta-tion of the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture (Aleksandras Stulginskis University at this moment) in 1988. The experi-ment was carried out in 4 replications. There are 20 experi-mental plots. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized way. The crop rotation in the experiment was as follows: 1) spring rape; 2) winter wheat; 3) maize; 4) spring barle y.The reduction of primary tillage intensity had an insignif-icant effect on the soil bulk density. In the upper (5–10 cm) and middle (15–20 cm) soil layers, the reduced tillage had an insignificant effect on the total porosity and pore distribution in the soil, compared with conventional soil ploughing. In the deepest (30–35 cm) soil layer, that was analysed, reduced tillage methods also had an insignificant impact on the to-tal porosity. While increasing the suction force, the highest amount of moisture in the soil layers of 5–10 cm and 15–20 cm, compared to conventional deep ploughing, was deter-mined after applying deep loosening and direct sowing into no-tilled soil. In the deepest (30–35 cm) soil layer, that was analysed, the highest moisture content was determined in the plots, which were shallowly loosened
