Effectiveness of Wildlife Clubs in Promotion of Wildlife Conservation Education in Kenya

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of WCK activities in promoting wildlife conservation education among secondary schools students’ in Kenya. This study employed descriptive survey and correlational research designs. A sample of 591 respondents was employed for the study. The study utilized questionnaires and interview schedule for data collection. The study found that there exist significant relationship between WCK activities and promotion of wildlife conservation. Further, the study identified the following challenges; lack of funds, awareness and willingness from the communities to implement conservation activities. In order to address the above challenges the following measures were suggested; Creation of awareness and education to the community and students and initiate cultural activities in different areas as well as financial support from the government and other organization would help in wildlife conservation. Most of the activities identified as important toward wildlife conservation were tree planting, park visit program and student seminar. It is anticipated that the findings of the current study will provide necessary information useful to the policy makers, members of WCK and other stakeholders to promote the effectiveness of WCK in wildlife conservation in Kenya.
