EFFECTS OF NAZİRE TRADITION AND RHETORIC TO THE TANZİMAT PERIOD NOVEL

Abstract

The poem thad had an old tradition in Tanzimat period, while it has been reorganised on the other hand the conceptual frames of new types such as novel, theatre had been begun to be designed. In this article, in critical approaches on novel of Tanzimat period authors, the effects of Ottoman Divan Literature tradition will be discussed. This article will evaluate how critical writings of the Tanzimat period influence the Tanzimat novel, what the suggestions for the writing of the novel include, and according to which criteria a successful novel is determined. In answering these questions, Namık Kemal’s piece, titled “Lisân-i Osmanî’nin Edebiyatı Hakkında Bazı Mülâhazâtı Şâmildir” and Recaizâde Mahmut Ekrem’s book of rhetoric Talim-i Edebiyat will be discussed within the framework of “realistic literature.” The approach of this period’s intellectuals to the novel will be addressed by means of the prefaces to their works with respect to “realism.” Beside these names, approaching to novel of Ahmet Mithat Efendi ve Nabızade Nazım will be discussed within the literalism context, by taking account of prefaces that they have written in their works.
