Effects of resistant training and aqueous extract of Tribulus terrestris on blood lipid profile in male rats

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 7

Abstract

This study investigated the combined effects of aqueous extracts of Tribulus terrestris and resistant training (RT) on blood lipid profile in healthy male rats. For this investigation, two methods were used: resistant training, administration of Tribulus terrestris extract combined with resistant training. 90 male Sprug rats were selected and were divided randomly in 5 groups: 1- RT group with a dose 1 of Tribulus terrestris extract; 2- RT group with a dose 2 of Tribulus terrestris extract; 3- RT group with a dose 3 of Tribulus terrestris extract. The resistance training groups were trained three days a week. Furthermore, rats that were given to them Tribulus terrestris extract, were randomly assigned to 4 groups: 1- control, 2- dose 1 (5 mg), 3- dose 2 (10 mg), 4- dose 3 (15 mg aqueous extract of Tribulus terrestris). Exercise protocol was done for 8 weeks with three times per week. AFTER experimental protocols, blood samples were taken and triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL and LDL were compared between groups. Data were analyzed by ANOVA with repeated measures. Results showed that both protocols lead to significant improvements in concentration of triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL, LDL in rats that had been given to them Tribulus terrestris extract. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that using of Tribulus terrestris extract, as well as resistance training, is a useful method for regulating lipid profile.
