Effects of sport participation on mental health of University students

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of sports participation on mental health in University students. The study suggests that mental health characteristics provide the basis for improving the psychological and social variables. This study is descriptive and practical. The population consisted all students of Tabriz University. According to the latest statistics, students of university were about 20,000 people and 380 members of the community with using of Morgan table, selected randomly for sample. The instrument of research was a mental health questionnaire (GHQ). The validity of questionnaire confirmed and calculated was reliability 81/0. Descriptive statistics and U- Mann-Whitney test were used, using the software from SPSS, 18 at the significant level (P = 05/0).The results showed that among athletes and non-athletes students, there is no significant difference in mental health variables.
