Effects of Statins on Bone

Abstract
Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease. The prevelance of osteoporosis is expected to rise due to elderly patients increase worldwide. For this reason, new treatment options as well as existing treatment methods to prevent or treat of osteoporosis are investigated. The statins may not only lower cholesterol, they may stimulate bone formation, as suggested by a number of studies and animal trials. However, prospective randomized and controlled studies are needed to evaluate the effect of statins in the treatment of osteoporosis.
