Epidemiological Analysis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Strains Isolated from Patients of Small Communities Living in the South-East of Poland
Journal Title: Polish Journal of Microbiology - Year 2015, Vol 64, Issue 3
Abstract
The diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates, collected from a single hospital, was analyzed by ligation-mediated PCR techniques: FLiP and FLAP, and hybridization technique, IS6110-RFLP. The isolated strains were divided in terms of location (3 towns of Podkarpackie voivodeship differing in population size) and relationship (8 members of 4 families, each represented by 2 patients). Within each family identical DNA profiles, as well as drug resistance patterns were identified indicating a great chance of transmission of strains within the same family. Identical, or very similar patterns were also shared by strains isolated from unrelated patients living in a very small town (1 200 inhabitants) or hospitalized in the same place and time.

Chaperone DnaJ Influences the Formation of Biofilm by Escherichia coli
DnaJ chaperone, a member of the so called DnaK-DnaJ-GrpE chaperone machine plays an important role in cell physiology. The ability of Escherichia coli ΔdnaJ mutant to form biofilm was studied. It was shown that this muta...
Transferrin and Lactoferrin – Human Iron Sources for Enterococci
To overcome limitations in iron acquisition, enterococci have evolved a number of mechanisms to scavenge iron from the host iron-binding proteins – transferrin (TR) and lactoferrin (LF). The aim of this study was to demo...
Recovery of Gram-Positive Cocci and Candida albicans from Peroxygens/Silver-Based Disinfectants
Neutralization method evaluation is an important first step in disinfectant validation study program. It is, also, crucial in the assessment of the efficiency of microbial recovery media in the presence of residual bioci...
Effects of Selected Herbicides on Growth and Nitrogen Fixing Activity of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (Sb16)
A study was carried out to determine the effects of paraquat, pretilachlor and 2, 4-D on growth and nitrogen fixing activity of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (Sb16) and pH of Jensen’s N-free medium. The growth of Sb16 and...
Evaluation of Two Lactic Acid Bacteria Starter Cultures for the Fermentation of Natural Black Table Olives (Olea europaea L cv Kalamon)
The production of Greek-style natural black table olives remains an empirical process relying on spontaneous fermentation despite its economic significance. For this reason producers often resort to increased NaCl c...
