EUNAVFOR Med Sophia Operation as European Union’s Migration Policy Instrument

Abstract
The 2015 migration crisis in the Mediterranean region has forced the European Union to define its migration policy for the coming years together with the ways to enforce it. The EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA operation, initiated in May 2015 to eradicate smuggling of people across the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the tools under this policy. The operation pursues the objectives and tasks specified by the European Council. Out of the four planned phases of the operation, the second one is being implemented now (started in 2015). Apart from fighting smuggling of people on the high seas, the operations of EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA are focused on training seamen and officers of the Libyan Navy and Coast Guard.
