European development vectors of Ukraine (based on the publicistic writing of Ivan Franko)

Abstract
The article identi¿ es three European guidelines for the development of Ukraine, modeled by Ivan Franko: political, cultural and mental. Ukrainian identity through the prism of the category «Europe»is analyzed; the main mental signs of the Ukrainian-European are identi¿ ed. The democratic European values and their accentuations for the Ukrainian society are considered. The development of Ukrainian literature in the context of modern European trends (symbolism and modernism) is modeled. Europe, according to Ivan Franko’s journalism, is a geopolitical identity, a guarantor of democracy and a reference point for cultural development. The value European dominants that Ivan Franko singled out are relevant even today, when political, economic, and cultural ties with Europe are growing.
