Evaluation of low salinity polymer flooding in the Niger Delta oil fields
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF ADVANCED RESEARCH IN PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY & MANAGEMENT - Year 2019, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Enhanced oil recovery processes are applied to recover oil not produced by natural and secondary energy drive of the reservoir. Low salinity polymer can alter the rock wettability, reduced the residual oil saturation and weakens the capillary forces in order to enhance reservoir sweep. The problem of viscous fingering in waterflooding reduces its efficiency in oil recovery leading to by-passed oil in the reservoir. Low salinity Polymer flooding reduces this problem by changing from oil-wet to water-wet reducing water mobility and increases water viscosity to enhance oil displacement and reservoir sweep. In this study, Simulation has been carried out on a hypothetical model by using (ECLIPSE 100) as the simulator. The effects of different salinity and polymer concentrations reservoir performance were evaluated. The result of the study conducted shows that Low Salinity Polymer flooding improves oil recovery at different Salinity and Polymer Concentrations. The study also showed a relationship between the ratio of injected salinity to formation salinity and the recovery efficiency. This strategy used in this work can be applied in the industry to determine the optimal low salinity polymer concentration for maximal oil recovery
