Evaluation of platelet indices in complicated and non-complicated patients of diabetes mellitus

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder and a major health problem because of its high prevalence and morbidity. Platelets have a key role in development of its thrombogenic complications. Platelet size is considered as a marker and determinant of platelet function with younger, larger platelets exhibiting more reactivity. This study was carried out to compare Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) in subjects with diabetes and non diabetic controls. Method: Total 600 subjects, 400 diabetic patients with no complication and 200 patients with complicated diabetes were included. Detailed clinical history regarding duration, hypertension and complications was taken. PVI was obtained using three part automated cell counter. MPV, platelet count, PDW were measured and the variation of it was studied using independent “t” test. Result: The mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width was found to be on a higher side in the complicated diabetic patients MPV-(12.5±3.41fl) PDW-15.75±2.45fl)..as compared to non complicateddiabetics.(MPV 10.5±2.32fl),(PDW13.7±2.57fl). Conclusion: Thus Platelet indices should be further explored as surrogate markers to develop a clinical tool to detect microvascular and macrovascular changes.
