Evaluation of selected indicators of antioxidant status in patients with head and neck cancer

Journal Title: Otolaryngologia Polska - Year 2015, Vol 69, Issue 5

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the severity of lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and enzymatic antioxidant barrier in red blood cells of patients suffering from cancer of the head and neck and the healthy individuals. Material and methods: In the blood of 22 patients and healthy volunteers determined superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and malondialdehyde by the spectrophotometric method. Results: It was found decreased activity of SOD, CAT, GPx and an increase of MDA concentration in patients with cancer compared to the control group. Discussion: The level of lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes of patients indicates an intensification in their process, and the results clearly demonstrate that enzymatic antioxidant system weakness. However, the presented results are pilot character, were conducted on a small group of subjects, and it seems necessary to expand research panel to genetic and non-genetic factors.
