Evaluation of stromal proteins expression (MMP-1, MMP-2) and their inhibitor (TIMP-3) in cysts and odontogenous neoplasms of the facial skeleton

Abstract
Aim of the study: To evaluate the expression of metalloproteinases MMP-1 and MMP-2 as well as that of the inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 TIMP-3 in odontogenous cysts. Their potential prognostic factor in the development of odontogenous tumors, particularly ameloblastomas was also examined.Material and methods: The study involved 74 patients hospitalized in the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial and Oncological Surgery of Medical University of Lodz between 1982-2002. The patients were divided into 3 groups relative to histopathological results: group I – odontogenous cysts – 42 subjects, group II – adamantinomas – 18 subjects, group III – odontogenous neoplasms other than adamantinomas – 14 subjects.Conclusions: MMP-1 expression is present in cases of patients with odontogenous cysts who develop inflammation.MMP-1andTIMP-3expressionis present in cases of odontogenous neoplasm recurrence. MMP-2 expression is present in cases of odontogenous neoplasms without recurrence.
