Evaluation of the number of occlusal contacts recorded by two-dimensional and three-dimensional methods
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction One of the goals of orthodontic treatment is to achieve a stable occlusion. The functional stability of the occlusion is ensured by good intercuspation, with many properly located occlusal contacts. To be able to evaluate changes occurring in the occlusion, a precise, repeatable occlusal protocol should be used. The aim of the study was to compare three methods of recording occlusal contacts: the use of an articulating paper, the use of the MP-scan method and the analysis of the occlusogram of virtual models based on the assessment of the number of occlusal points. Material and methods Twenty enrolled patients with permanent dentition were planned to be treated with orthodontic fixed appliance. The study was carried out in the sitting position of the patient, at maximum intercuspation. Occlusal contacts were registered using Baush 40μm articulating paper. Maxillary and mandibular occlusal views were captured with the aid of occlusal mirrors. Occlusal protocols were prepared according to the MP-scan method, using 80μm Arti-Dry fibrinous papers applied on 100μm Progress articulating papers. Patients were taken impressions for diagnostic plaster models using alginate impression material and a wax occlusal register. The models were scanned with the laboratory scanner. The .stl models were converted to .o3m models for analysis of the occlusogram using the DDP-Ortho computer program. The number of occlusal contacts was counted on intraoral photographs of the maxillary occlusal shots, fibrinous papers and 3D occlusograms. Results and conclusions Research has shown that contact registration methods are not ideal and do not provide the same results. In the case of the thinner paper usage, more contact points were registered. It is problematic to take a photograph of a view reflected with an occlusal mirror because of the lack of standardization of this procedure. The photograph must be taken immediately after biting on the articulating paper while maintaining the perfect dryness of the teeth. Recording contact points on fibrinous papers is a simpler and more transparent method. The 3D occlusogram is the most clear way of occlusal contacts registration.
