Evaluation of the risk of caries among 3rd year students of Dentistry, Medical University of Lodz – preliminary report

Abstract
Introduction: Dental caries is a disease affecting the majority of the population. Also the current tendency towards non-invasive treatment of carious lesions encourages the implementation of new caries prevention methods.Aim of the study: To evaluate risk of caries among 3rd year students of dentistry by means of Cario-gram software. Material and methods: The study group consisted of twenty 3rd year students of dentistry. Data concerning systemic diseases, oral hygiene and diet, were obtained by means of a questionnaire. DMFT and the amount of plaque using Silnes-Löe Plaque Index were assessed during clinical examination. Moreover, the stimulated saliva secretion rate per minute was measured. Saliva samples were examined for Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus counts. Results: Cariogram was drawn for each student to present obtained results. The average caries risk in the studied population was assessed as moderate. Conclusion: Cariogram turned out to be very useful in assessing predisposition to caries in individual patients.
