FACTORS CONTROLLING CHANGES OF GAS COMPOSITION WITHIN THE OTWOCK LANDFILL

Abstract
The field research conducted at the municipal landfill in Otwock (after reclamation) indicated that biochemical processes are still active and landfill gas (biogas) is being generated. The objective of this study was to identify the factors controlling temporal and lateral variation in concentration of landfill gas. Measurement of oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, analysed with regard to climatic conditions indicated that biogas formation strongly depended on moisture content in the landfill body. Temperature, pH of environment and composition of refuses also play some role in controlling changes of gas composition.
