FACTORS LIMITING RURAL YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN AGRICULTUREBASED LIVELIHOOD ACTIVITIES IN TEHSIL KARSOG OF HIMACHAL PRADESH

Abstract

There has been theoretical as well as applied evidence about declining youth participation in agriculture-based livelihood activities. The present study investigated the important factors constraining rural youth participation in agriculture-based livelihood activities. Examination of a sample of 250 youth respondents identified the poor return on investment, unpredictable prices of agricultural produce, high input costs and labor intensive nature of agriculture based livelihood activities as the important factors constraining youth involvement in agriculture-based livelihood activities in the study area. The overall results for predominantly agricultural-based activities in which youth participate indicate that youths in the study area do not significantly engage in agriculture-based livelihood activities. However, crop farming and livestock rearing are the two major activities in which they are involved. The results of the study will have some useful implication for the policymakers and it is recommended that all stakeholders must make efforts to address various constraints identified by respondents for increasing youth participation in agriculture-based livelihood acti
