Feasibility Study of Biogas Production in Fars Province Ranches
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 3
Abstract
Increasing energy requirements in the world, particularly in developing countries, as well as the role energy plays in development, economic welfare, and technology, make utilization of various energy sources an inevitable necessity. On the other hand, fossil resources are depeletable and contaminate the environment. For this reason, devising new methods for energy generation without the disadvantages of classical methods has become commonplace all over the world. One of these methods is generating energy from biomass which is in turn divided into several main procedures including burning, bioethanol generation, artificial thermo-chemical gas generation, and biogas generation. Biogas is obtained from anaerobic fermentation of biomass. The main sources used for biogas generation include livestock waste, urban and industrial waste, garbage, and agricultural waste. This study investigates the possibility of generating biogas from livestock waste produced in Fars Province livestock farms. The main purpose here is to evaluatethe feasibility of generating electrical and thermal energy from the biogas obtained from livestock waste in these farms. The study also investigates biogas generation from livestock waste, and estimates the associated costs as well as return of capital period for constructing a biog as digester in Fars Province. The results indicate that constructing digesters for biogas generation on livestock farms is (technically) viable, and that the return of capital period as well as the relevant risks is acceptable.
