Fluctuations in alcohol demand among adolescents
Journal Title: Alkoholizm i Narkomania - Year 2005, Vol 18, Issue 4
Abstract
The article presents the fluctuations in alcohol demand among adolescents in Poland in XX and XXI century and interprets it in terms of diffusion of innovation theory. The analysis of time series of results of school surveys undertaken since 1913 suggests considerable changes in alcohol consumption by adolescents – from high level of prevalence, throughout the period of low prevalence till increase again. The quantitative changes were associated with qualitative changes – from drinking with family accepted by parents to drinking with peers. The high increase in alcohol use by adolescents in the 1990’s could be explained by development of youth culture founded on the grounds of social and moral transitions in second half of XX century. The youth culture including drinking has developed following to the Rogers’ model of diffusion of innovation.
