FROM NOSTALGIA TO PTSD
Journal Title: Scientific Journal of the Military University of Land Forces - Year 2009, Vol 153, Issue 3
Abstract
Participation in an armed conflict is probably the most traumatic experience for a person. The history of our civilization is largely the history of armed conflicts. Soldiers who take part in them – mainly young people – responded to war with a typical, normal reaction to an abnormal situation. These reactions were named nostalgia, homesickness, war neurosis or PTSD. The terms used were both culturally and politically conditioned and they also reflected the state of medical knowledge. Medical assistance offered was to help soldiers return to their units. It appears that the appropriate selection for military service, training based on the development of imagination and innovation can significantly reduce the consequences of traumatic experiences of war. When examining the lessons learned from these conflicts, combining them with new forms of training and supporting troops, one can effectively deal with the aftermath of war trauma.
