Fuel Tanker Explosion Disaster, Road Safety and Human Security in Nigeria: A Threat-Impact Analysis

Abstract

Fuel tanker explosion has been a common instance of transport mishap in Nigeria. The incidence and prevalence of this occurrence in Nigeria have been alarming over the years. This paper examines the phenomenon of fuel tanker explosion disaster with a view to underscoring its implications for national security of Nigeria. By way of qualitative analysis, anchored on secondary data, the paper posits that fuel tanker explosion disaster constitutes a veritable threat to road safety as well as human security in Nigeria in view of its destructive impacts and complications. As the way forward, the paper recommends, among other things, urgent revamp of rail transportation in Nigeria to provide an alternative to road haulage of fuel.
