FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICS OF IRREALITY OPERATORS

Journal Title: Мова - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 21

Abstract

The article represents results of the investigation of non-categorical means of expression of irreality as well as constructions which include epistemic predicates. The peculiarities of parenthesis are viewed from the point of the representation of different epistemic meanings as well as both absolute irreality and relative one. The choice of any unit with the epistemic component is determined with the subjective epistemic specifics of the whole utterance. The distinctive features of the irreality operators that characterize both the whole of utterance, beyond the statements in the text, and the whole of context — dictum as unreal are regarded. There are subjunctive mood and modal verbs among the means of dictum and while among the means of modus there are epistemic predicates, including phenomena of different grammatical classes such as meaningful verbs, linking verb, modal parenthesis and so on. The following groups of the means of modus are distinguished from in the aspect of expressing irreality that expressing by a speaker’s attitude towards the contents of an statement as a non-fact: 1) perceptive-cognitive predicates (predicates of opinion, of estimates, imagination), 2) predicates of perceptional perception (in their epistemic meanings), 3) constructions such as: it seems that / it’s seems that. Modal parenthesis with meanings of probability and assumption and which usually working as parenthetical expression fulfil functions that are alike to epistemic predicates. Epistemic adverbs like as the rest modal operators are able to be used in the context of real situation therefore changing its modality from real into unreal. Different operators can express both types of relations and both degrees of irreality: relative and absolute.
