FUTURE THOUGHTS AND CAREER CHOICES OF LAST YEAR OF MEDICAL FACULTY STUDENTS AND AFFECTING FACTORS

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Objective: This paper aims to investigate the future thoughts and career choices of last year of medical faculty students. Besides, the factors affecting these thoughts and choices will be examined. Methods: The cross-sectional study was performed on 273 last year of medical faculty students between the date of 24 November 2016 and 6 December 2016. 77,2 % of sample have been reached. A questionnaire with 17 questions was carried out on the participants. In the questionnaire the reasons to choice medical faculty, the institutions in which the students wants to work and the thoughts of the students on specialty and the examination for specialty in medicine (TUS) were questioned. The data was analyzed with SPSS 18,00, frequency and percentages were exposed, the chi-square test was used to analyze categorical variables. The p<0,05 was accepted for statistical significance. The required permissions from the institution and participants were obtained. Results: The 59% of participants were females, the 41% were males. Most of the participants (84,4%) thought that compulsory service is a necessity. 67,2% of the participants stated that they plan to bone for TUS while they were at compulsory service. However, 25,7% of the participants declared that they only plan to bone for TUS. The students thought that specialty is a necessity within the scopes of job satisfaction (53,0%), career opportunities (19,1%), gaining more earnings (9,3%), status (7,1%) and pressures from family and environment (2,2%). 44,8% of the students specified that preparation for TUS negatively affects medical education while 39,9% thought that effect is positive. Besides, 21,3% declared that TUS has no effect on medical education. The factors affecting the choice of specialty are specified as area of interest (80,3%), TUS scores (72,1%), the existence and the number of shifts (59,0%), the intensity of working hours (57,9%), economic earnings (51,9%), the risk of malpractice (42,6%). Any significant difference between genders on the choice of specialty field has not been detected (p:0,315). Conclusions: Most of the students aims to be a specialist and work on tertiary care. The choice of specialty fields are determined by the factors like area of interest, TUS scores, number of shifts, economic earning and malpractice.
