Abstract

The paper treats the heuristic value of core-formed glass vessels from Odessa Archaeological Museum as a historical source for inquiries in history of Ancient Greek settlement of North Pontic region. The author applied archive documents from Odessa archaeological museum own archive, Odessa region state archive and Manuscripts’ Institute of V.Vernadsky library (Kyiv). There were three main stages of the collection’s formation. The first stage (1825-1922) was the most fruitful and was connected to the activity of Odessa Society of History and Antiquities. Since its foundation this Society accumulated a notable collection of glass vessels in several ways. The most vessels were presented to the Society by donators. Some vessels were bought from illegal antiquities re-sellers. A small amount of vessels was acquired through its own field-work. The second stage (1922-1950) saw a dramatic decrease in the acquisition rate. The core-formed glass fragments were found in the excavations of Olbia Pontica and Greek settlement on the island of Berezan. Some items that were confiscated from private collections, were transferred to the Museum by Romanian administration in 1943. However, the World War II resulted in an inevitable loss of certain vessels acquired in pre-war time. The third stage (1950-till now) is characterized by active field-work of the Museum on the various ancient Greek sites of the region: Niconion, Tyras, Koshary. The own field-work is the main and only way of core-formed glass acquisition by the Museum nowadays. There are 65 core-formed glass vessels in Museum now. The collection comprises 13 items from Panticepeum, 11 from Olbia, 16 from Niconion, 9 from Tyras, 1 from island of Berezan, 1 from Koshary settlement and 14 of unknown origin.
