Globalization in Bengali Drama and Ajitesh Bandopadhyay

Abstract

Ajitesh Bandyopadhyay is one of the most successful playwright in Modern Bengali Drama. In Sixties, Ajitesh has come from an industrial area far away from Calcutta and initiated the transition of his stage life beside two of the most powerful playwrights of that era in Bengali theatre like Shambhu Mitra (1915-1997) and Utpal Dutta (1929-1993). If we look on his direction, acting, play and other theatrical part of his performance, it can be easily seen that the main string of his dramatic success was hidden in making the localised form of Bengali drama from the source of various famous Western drama of Bertolt Brecht, Henrik Ibsen, Pirandello and many others. Mainly, by the process of his Bangiyakaranaor Sthanikarana (ie. ‘Localisation’) he made the direct translation from foreign play in to the Bengali form. In his action of work, he took the background of the original foreign play out of the ground according to its country, men and time and set it in to his own dramatic creation as per the contemporary Bengali society with a new story, characters and dialogues. The socio-economic structure of the contemporary Bengali culture with its regional base was tried to shown in every respect on stage by him and his co-actors in a natural way. In foreign playwrights Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, Bertolt Brecht, Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Henrik Ibsen, Edward Albee and many others have already been converted in to Bengali drama in many ways. To dissolve the traditional ‘empathy’ of Brecht’s drama in to modern Bengali play was being practiced by Ajitesh more practically rather than its theoretical application. He has made the ideal production of Brecht’s play in Bengali drama. He was one of the wonderful successor among those Bengali playwrights who has tried to reach in goal with global attitude by their particular dramatic effort and work. Playwrights like Ashok Mukherjee, Ramaprasad Banik, Rudrapasada Sengupta, Soumitra Chatterjee and Bivash Chakraborty has taken a vivid choice regarding the style of acting as well as the selection of subject for localisation like Ajitesh Bandopadhyay.
