Górny Śląsk – polski przyczółek zdobyty przez obcą mszycę Prociphilus (Meliarhizophagus) fraxinifolii (Riley, 1879)

Abstract

Upper Silesia – a Polish bridgehead gained by Prociphilus (Meliarhizophagus) fraxinifolii (Riley, 1879), an alien aphid. Prociphilus (Meliarhizophagus) fraxinifolii (Riley, 1879) is a North American species which, beyond its native range, has been observed in Africa, South America and eastern Asia. Since the first years of the present century it has also been found in Europe. In 2012, this species was recorded for the first time in Upper Silesia (S Poland). Observations in subsequent years showed a fairly large-scale occurrence in this region (12 localities). The rate at which this species is spreading indicates that it may already be occurring in other parts of the country. Evidence for this appears to be provided by its biological properties, which are summarized in the present paper. They substantially influence its significant biological potential and, consequently, its adaptive capabilities. This paper covers the basic diagnostic features of P. (Meliarhizophagus) fraxinifolii – this will enable it to be quickly and easily distinguished from the other indigenous species of the subgenus Prociphilus (P. bumeliae, P. fraxini). A standardized Polish nomenclature for all species of Prociphilus currently recorded in Poland is proposed.
