Governmentality and what next?: Constructing the subjectivity of people with intellectual disabilities from the perspective of Michel Foucault’s philosophy

Abstract
The analysis of conditions for creating a system for rehabilitation of disabled people after the year 1989 in Poland in a discursive perspective (Mouffe 2005; Laclau 1998; Rasinski 2010) allows to specify the governmentality, which forms this system. American-style neo-liberal governmentality adopted in Poland assumed both of the theoretical variants of European liberalism indicated by Foucault, while neither accepting the freedoms nor ceding the rights of intellectually disabled people according to their interests. Shaped governmentality of the rehabilitation system consolidates this duality, shaping the image of a disabled person, who does not co-participate in ruling, but is economically useful and is the subject to the prescriptive authority of pastoral type. These types of governmentality create the conditions to construct a schizophrenic normality of the abnormal.<br/><br/>
