Governmentality and what next?: The „Rank-and-file” Academic Workers and Their Fantasy of Just Power – The Voices of Academic Workers in the University Reform Debate

Journal Title: Miscellanea Anthropologica et Sociologica - Year 2018, Vol 19, Issue 3

Abstract

The reforming of the Polish system of higher education and science was accompanied by a wide-ranging public debate. The debate mobilized groups – such as the rank-and-file academic workers – that are not usually present in the media sphere. The diagnoses and proposals made by the workers formed an important part of the collective discursive reconstruction of the causes of university’s crisis of legitimacy. This paper is based on a discourse analysis of polish quality press in the years 2008 and 2009 – a period when the academic rank-and-file contributed to the debate. The aim of the paper is to present a reconstruction of the diagnoses and plans formulated by the academic rank-and-file, concerning the state of the polish university and the changes that have to be made to avert its crisis. The most important contribution of academic workers was the criticism of “academic feudalism”. In their plans for the future of academia they envisaged a system in which the professors lacked the power to make discretionary decisions and in effect, could not wield power over their younger colleagues. The rank-and-file lack of trust in the academic community meant that their plans have not assumed a more democratic system of power. They preferred authoritarian structures of power that would objectively evaluate, and distribute just awards and punishments among the workers of the academia.
