Abstract
The article focuses on the analysis of non-verbal signs and their role in the postmodern text. Based on the novels of the contemporary Scottish author Ali Smith, it identifies the most frequent graphemes and analyzes the effect achieved by their use. The article shows that in postmodern fiction non-verbal signs are not exclusively secondary, complementing the verbal ones, but they also render information, defining the form and content of the text.
