Health aging: medicalbiological and socioeconomic aspects

Abstract

The review is devoted to the discussion of population, biomedical and socioeconomic aspects of aging. The data have been presented on the demographic situation in the world, due to the rapid growth of aging in the XXI century and the questions that arise in this connection, to health care organizations and society as a whole. The results of the discussion on the attitude towards aging as a disease are given. The definitions of «healthy» and «active» aging have been considered, and problems of studying the biology of aging and the development of innovations have been discussed. The primary tasks for prediction and prevention of ageassociated diseases were considered, namely: the definition of genetic, molecular and cellular factors that determine the rate of aging processes, reduce the functionality of the elderly and increase the risk of disease; definition of genetic and epigenetic foundations of aging, agerelated diseases, determination of the influence of metabolic and immune status in healthy aging and the role of stem cells in aging as a possible direction of prevention and treatment of ageassociated diseases. It has been emphasized that the problems of aging are connected not only with biological processes, but also with a significant change in social status, which leads to the development of psychosocial problems. The approaches to managing the aging populations at the systemic, institutional and individual levels, which require close cooperation between organizations and countries, was discussed. The concept adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for improving the quality of life of older people, increasing the «healthy period» of life, as well as the global strategy and objectives adopted by WHO to promote healthy aging has been presented.
