Henna As a Symbol Language of Classical Turkish Poetry

Abstract

Henna is used for coloring and beautifying hands, feet, hairs and beards for its pigmentary nature and also for treatment and it is known that henna is used as the spell of happiness, chance and fertility for protection against evilness. Religiously accepted aspect of henna has shaped it as a protective and material element of culture that brings luck and brought a mission of protective spell for favorable conclusion of attempts. Importance of henna in our culture arises from its symbolic characteristic that mainly expresses ‚commitment‛. This study will firstly discuss the role of henna, which is presented with various metaphors in our classical poetry for its green color in the state of powder and red color after being applied, in cosmetics treatment. In the following section, its symbolic value expressing fertility, luck and joy in special days and ceremonies will be explained.
