Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 3
Abstract
Objectives: Herpetic radiculopathy should be remembered making diagnosis of patients referring with radicular pain and weakness. Summary of background data: Herpes zoster is a neurothropic virus associated with a variety of neurological manifestations including segmental or polyradiculitis. Though many cases have been reported since 1866, motor weakness occurs 1-5% of patients having zoster infection. Methods: Two patients referred to our clinic complaining from weakness of their extremities following herpes zoster rash. Differential diagnosis was made and intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation program was started. The patients were followed up for 6 months. Results: The first patient showed nearly complete recovery in 6 months time while almost complete recovery was observed in 4 months time in the second case. Conclusion: Intervertebral disc disease is the most common the cause of radicular pain of the patients referring to the outpatient clinics. Herpes zoster radiculopathy, though rare, can occur either before or after the onset of characteristic rash, within a time interval of 2-3 weeks. The prognosis is very good, most patients show significant improvement in 6-12 months.
