«High and earth»: private life prisoners officers in the camp Tuchola (Poland) in 1921

Abstract

The article analyzes some manifestations privacy captive officers UGA in the camp Tuchola (Poland) in 1921 established that despite the limitations camp regime individuals from among the prisoners managed to add «civil taste» to life in Tuchola through additional rations, receiving funds from relatives and charities. Some of the prisoners lucky to get even better – in their present life romantic relationships with women (nurses working in hospitals). Although this aspect is only about two officers who worked in the office of the Polish commandant, but their situation is directly and indirectly affects the overall morale Galician’s other prisoners, making it unnecessary elements of tension and nervousness. The rest of the prisoners had UGA and could be of life «benefits» in Tuchola, so much of their private life was spent in the camp buffet «Mother Tavern» which was a real consolation for prisoners – Ukrainian. In addition to the acquisition reasonably priced food buffet provided prisoners opportunity to comfortably hold of his weary long sitting in camp in time, find out the latest news – comfortable (as far as possible in camp conditions) sitting in the equipped leisure room for a cup of coffee and glass of tea. Thanks to the «Mother Taverns» prisoners were able to finance their own conduct cultural and educational activities, and in particular the organization of events at the camp. The fact that part of the net profit obtained buffet decision officers transferred prisoners Ukrainian charitable organization «Self», which referred them to the humanitarian needs. In particular, it gave irrevocable and rotary cash assistance to all needy from among the captured soldiers UGA, bought additional products to improve nutrition prisoners and listed the amount determined to support the Ukrainian educational foundations in Ukraine (by consent of the public prisoners Galicia). His educational function successfully performed in the camp library, which lasted Book constant motion – always bought new books and magazines subscription, but at the same time, the process of transferring readings outside the camp – for the needs of Ukrainian educational institutions and organizations. In this way the prisoners were enlisted to build Ukrainian national life in the land (in Galicia) proclaimed its national-statist stance. Although several dozen captured soldiers UGA could significantly affect the progress of the Western lands, their example of commitment to the national cause is to present a model for Ukrainian civil society.
