History of formation and development of a school course “Local History”: using Zaporizhzhya Region as an example

Abstract
The article is devoted to the history of development of the school course “Local History” at secondary general schools of Ukraine. Local history is the detailed study of a history of the part of the country during the lessons and after classes. Educa¬tional and upbringing objectives and functions of the course “Local History” are dwelt upon. The course aims to provide par¬ticipants an opportunity to learn about nature, population, economy, history and culture of Zaporizhzhya region. Zaporizhzhya region is one of the first among other regions of Ukraine by providing the course of local history at schools. A set of local history textbooks has been published from 2000 to 2003 years. The article defines the main parts of local history textbooks for the stu¬dents of 5–11 forms. The author maintains that the school course “Local History” has a great upbringing effect on a student, especially in the ethic and patriotic context. In conclusion the author considered the further perspectives of the development of school course “Local History”.
