Human Staphylococcus aureus lineages among Zoological Park residents in Greece
Journal Title: Open Veterinary Journal - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a part of the microbiota flora in many animal species. The clonal spread of S. aureus among animals and personnel in a Zoological Park was investigated. Samples were collected from colonized and infected sites among 32 mammals, 11 birds and eight humans. The genes mecA, mecC, lukF/lukS-PV (encoding PantonValentine leukocidin, PVL) and tst (toxic shock syndrome toxin-1) were investigated by PCR. Clones were defined by Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST), spa type and Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE). Seven S. aureus isolates were recovered from four animals and one from an employee. All were mecA, mecC and tst–negative, whereas, one carried the PVL genes and was isolated from an infected Squirrel monkey. Clonal analysis revealed the occurrence of seven STs, eight PFGE and five spa types including ones of human origin. Even though a variety of genotypes were identified among S. aureus strains colonizing zoo park residents, our results indicate that colonization with human lineages has indeed occurred.

Influence of different storage times and temperatures on blood gas and acid-base balance in ovine venous blood
The present study was designed to investigate the effects of storage temperature and time on blood gas and acid-base balance of ovine venous blood. Ten clinically healthy sheep were used in this study. A total number of...
Review on mechanisms of dairy summer infertility and implications for hormonal intervention
In dairy cows and buffaloes, summer heat stress (HS) reduces milk yield and delays return to pregnancy leading to financial loss. Clues for effective interventions against summer infertility (SI) lie in understanding th...
Chlorpyrifos chronic toxicity in broilers and effect of vitamin C
An experiment was conducted to study chlorpyrifos chronic toxicity in broilers and the protective effect of vitamin C. Oral administration of 0.8 mg/kg body weight (bw) (1/50 LD50) chlorpyrifos (Radar®), produced mild...
A three years retrospective study on the nature and cause of ocular dermoids in cross-bred calves
Nature and cause of ocular dermoids were investigated by field studies, pedigree analysis, clinical examination and light microscopy. It was determined that ocular dermoids in cross-bred calves are genetically-transmitt...
Thoracic duct lymphography by subcutaneous contrast agent injection in a dog with chylothorax
A 4-year-old male Japanese Shiba Inu presented with recurrent chylothorax. The thoracic duct was successfully imaged using computed tomography after the injection of an iodine contrast agent into the subcutaneous tissue...
