Abstract
On Imam Malik’s al-Muwatta As a source of hadīth and fiqh, al-Muwatta is among the important works of the early period of Islam. There are some debates about the reason and writing his-tory of Muvatta. The general opinion is that actually al-Muwatta was shaped by Imam Malik following the order of the official authority. al-Muwatta is a work that attracts attention both in terms of traditions and concepts. The hadīths and the vi-ews of the Sahaba take the greatest part of al-Muvatta. Along with the hadīths, Imam Malik's views have shaped the content of al-Muwatta. Concepts which are related to sunnah, amal and fiqh in al-Muvatta provides important information about the tho-ught of the methodology of the first period. al-Muvatta was transmitted by many students of Imam Malik. In later periods, many commentaries were written on it. al-Muwatta, which has attracted the attention of both the Westerners and Muslim scho-lars, has been examined by the orientalist writings significantly in relation to the da-te of its original composition.
